The Venice Heritage Museum team is excited to announce our first-ever VHM Film Festival taking place on Sat, August 13 from 7-10 pm outdoors at Vice Media in Venice!
With the partnership of the UCLA Film & Television Archive, Venice Arts, Venice Institute of Contemporary Art, and Sherman Paramount Pathe News, the VHM team has curated a fantastic selection of short films celebrating our city's historic, artistic, and cultural legacy. We're also excited to debut clips from our own recently-launched VHM Oral History Project, featuring the stories of living legends who have helped shape Venice's diverse and influential history. We threw a party a few weeks back at Hama Sushi to benefit the Museum project, featuring a mini-exhibition celebrating the history of the Venice Lagoon aka Windward Circle — and we are stoked to share that this epic night brought out 100 supporters and raised over $1,000 for the Venice Heritage Museum!
Thank YOU for your support, Hama Sushi for hosting, DJ Krye for spinning all night, our awesome team for putting the event together, and our volunteer filmmakers, Anastasia Fugger and Jesse Brunt, for capturing the night and interviews with our multi-generational crowd! Stephen Pouliot, one of our VHM Founding Board Members, just published an article about the history of notorious actress and cultural figure, Sarah Bernhardt, in Venice at founder Abbot Kinney's request. The Doge, always a strategic promoter, invited Ms. Bernhardt to perform when other theaters downtown had blackballed her for perceived indecency.
You can find the article in the March 2022 issue of local magazine, Venice Living, where our team has a recurring column called 'History of Venice' — or enjoy it right here on our blog, reprinted with the blessing of publisher, Carole Stein. Thanks to YOU, we met our year-end goal! We are incredibly grateful to the countless Venice community members and network of supporters who donated their time, money, and energy this year toward helping us reach our Phase 1 Goal: Raising $115,000 to help restore our original Pacific Electric Red Car trolley and bring it home to Centennial Park! The growing success of this grassroots campaign is thanks to YOU. In combination with our tireless volunteer team, we are on our way towards bringing a much-needed museum to life that will honor and celebrate Venice's diverse cultural heritage.
Stay tuned for more updates on the project in the new year. Until then, cheers to us and cheers to VENICE! p.s. here's a little recap video we made to say thank you & honor how far we've come in 2021! We're almost there! Help us close the gap.
We're thrilled to announce that with your support, we've raised 92% of our $115K goal this year to help launch the Venice Heritage Museum project! Thanks to our community-led, grassroots fundraising efforts, we have raised $106K+ towards building Venice's first-ever museum. Will you help us close the gap and reach $115,000 by year's end? Check out the following opportunities to support! We're so close.
Let's do this, Venetians! We're so close. We're pleased to share that the Museum team was recently invited to meet with the Superintendent of the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation & Parks, whose department manages Centennial Park where we are proposing to install the Venice Heritage Museum.
With the support of our local Council District 11 planning staff, our Board President and Treasurer shared the most up-to-date vision for installing the Museum campus at Centennial Park, as well as the tremendous progress we've made in our fundraising and outreach efforts over the past year ($95K thus far!). At that meeting, we were invited by the Superintendent to submit an updated formal proposal to partner with the City to bring the Museum to life at this underutilized, high potential park site. We submitted the updated proposal two weeks ago in mid-November and are now awaiting feedback from the Dept. of Recreation & Parks. We look forward to sharing more with you when we hear about next steps! Marty Schatz, with assistance from Sarah Schacht (both Board Members Emeritus), just published an article about the history of the Short Line Canals in Venice — the canals that we know and continue to enjoy in the Venice of today.
Marty Schatz, Board Members Emeritus, just published an article about the history of the lost canals of Venice — not the ones we today, but Abbot Kinney's original canals which were paved over in the late 1920s.
